Pauli Murray was a civil rights activist, scholar, theorist, lawyer, educator, writer, Episcopal priest. She was the author of States’ Laws on Race and Color, defined as the “bible” of the civil rights movement by Thurgood Marshall. Murray worked to expand legal protection for gender equality. Murray did not fit the expectation of gender norms. She was known to self describe as he/she to family and friends, while using she/her in formal writings.
